Problems with Cash Registers

Cash registers do have an embedded chip that calculates the date and year. Departments with cash registers need to take action to ensure these work past December 31, 1999.

The campus Cashier's Office is not involved with the daily operations of campus department using cash registers. However, the following advice is offered.

  • Individual departments should contact the manufacturer, and investigate whether the register model is Y2K compatible or if the chip has to be replaced.

  • Some departments within the University have their cash register transactions downloaded into the general ledger. They should make sure that any changes in the date function of the cash register don't affect the format of the general ledger download.

Cash registers have EQ code K2060 in the BETS database. This code can be used by a department, with the on-line BET770 report, to get a list of all of the department's cash registers in the BETS database, where the unit cost was over $500.
