Departmental networking equipment Most of the networking equipment on campus is the responsibility of Communication and Network Services (CNS). Y2K efforts by CNS are described on their web site. The site includes compliance information for equipment used in the campus network.
Some campus departments have Y2K compliance responsibility for networking equipment connected to the campus network but not supported by CNS. Also, according to CNS, the following departments have private networks for which they are responsible:
Botanical Garden Cal Performances California Alumni Association Center for Media Independent Learning Child Care Center EECS Hearst Gym Journalism MCB (Barker-Koshland) Office of Technology Licensing PGES Plant & Microbial Biology Public Health Residence Halls (Housing and Dining) UC Printing University Extension The CNS web site has links to many vendor sites that may be useful for departments in researching Y2K compliance for their networking equipment. A good discussion (with links) of the Y2K status of networking equipment from Cisco, Bay Networks, 3Com, Cabletron, Xylan, Lucent, and Intel can be found here. As to why departments should be concerned about their network routers and switches, in a March 1999 article, the Gartner Group was quoted as saying that for local area networks that haven't been specifically upgraded to be year 2000-compliant, about sixty percent contain components that aren't new enough to meet vendor year guarantees for 2000 compliance. Of this older equipment, the Gartner Group estimates that about half will suffer disruption on Jan. 1, 2000. Return to For Business Managers/Staff
