Administrative Equipment

What About?

If you didn't find a type of administrative equipment on the main Administrative Equipment page, but think it might have a Y2K problem, then consider the two questions below:

Does the equipment have a clock that tracks the year?

Equipment like coffee makers may know the time of day, or even the day of the week, but that doesn't mean they are likely candidates to have a Y2K problem. If a piece of equipment doesn't know (display) a date (like March 15), then you can (fairly safely) assume that it doesn't have a Y2K problem. [You can stop here.]

If the piece of equipment does know the date, it probably also knows the year, so it can handle February 29th correctly. So if it has a date, it's a possible candidate for Y2K problems.

Put differently, the following equipment should be considered to not have Y2K problems:

  • Equipment which does not have a battery.
  • Equpment that does not display clock information.
  • Equipment with a time of day clock, but which doesn't distinguish one day from, the next. A basic wall clock is an example
  • Equpment that has a weekly cycle, such as a thermostat that controls room temperature on weekdays and weekends, but does not keep track of the date of year.

Is the equipment in a category other than "administrative equipment"?

Research equipment is covered elsewhere, as is building systems equipment, access/alarms equipment, computers, and departmental networking equipment

Otherwise
If there is a category that you still think is missing from the list of administrative equipment with possible Y2K problems, here, please notify admineq@uclink4.berkeley.edu
