The following e-mail was sent out on January 21, 1999, of this year, by Susan Slavick of the College of Chemistry, on behalf of the Departmental Building Alarms And Access Control subcommittee (link to subcommittee membership and charge page)
TO: Building Coordinators Hi, all Because my unit, the College of Chemistry, is one of the Campus units with a stand-alone computerized access control system (a system not tied in to the Campus/UCPD system), I have been asked to participate as a member of a newly formed subcommittee on Departmental Building Alarms and Access Controls in support of the Campus Steering Committee on Y2K. The Campus Y2K Steering Committee, chaired by Vice Chancellor Mitchell, is charged primarily with assisting departments and units in identifying and evaluating potential Y2K problems and assisting them in developing departmental [re]mediation plans. Subcommittees are looking into issues such as research equipment, Physical Plant equipment, departmental computers, etc. By the end of February '99, a Campus Year 2000 Website will be online, incorporating guidelines and generic recommendations developed by each of the subcommittees. More information on the Steering Committee and its subcommittees can be found in the Berkeley Computing and Communications Newsletter (Vol. 9, No 1-Winter 1999). To this end, I have been asked to solicit information on all existing stand-along access control systems and alarms throughout Campus. To help us help you, please reply to this e-mail with the information below. Because many buildings are shared by different departments, we ask that the Building Coordinators/Managers work with the various Departmental Chairs (or their designees) to ensure that all potential sources of Y2K problems in the area of access controls and alarms are taken into account. In order to have the information evaluated and compiled in time for the establishment of the website, it would greatly help us to have the reply back by the end of January.
