Campus Building Systems

The issue
Many building systems are controlled by software, either in computer applications or embedded systems, that could have trouble recognizing the century date change. Physical Plant - Campus Services (PP-CS) is working to ensure that campus buildings systems will operate as expected on January 1, 2000, as well as before and after that date.

Since the Spring of 1998, PP-CS has been inventorying building systems in all campus buildings, contacting vendors to determine the Y2K compliance of systems subject to problems, estimating costs for remediation, and preparing recommendations and taking corrective action.

Current status
The latest status of building systems is provided here. Issues involving building alarms and access controls for campus buildings are covered elsewhere, because PP-CS is not responsible for these. Building systems in leased buildings are also covered elsewhere, again because PP-CS is not responsible for these.

Buildings excluded (not under the direct control of the Regents of the University of California): the International House, the Faculty Club and the Women's Faculty Club, buildings controlled by fraternities and sororities, and U.C. Cooperative Housing buildings.

Departmental equipment
Departments may have installed their own building equipment, such as a packaged air conditioning unit. PP-CS is not responsible for equipment not installed and maintained by either PP-CS or Planning, Design, and Construction (PD&C). However, PP-CS will provide advice to departments for such equipment.
