The following is a summary of the Y2K compliance status of selected off-the-shelf application programs Go in use on the UC Berkeley campus.

Compliance status of application programs not listed below

For resources which can help you identify the compliance status of other application programs not listed below, see Commercial Off-the-Shelf Applications: Resources for Identifying Y2K Compliance Go .

For the compliance status of operating system software, such as Windows 95 and NT, Mac OS, and Solaris, see Platform-Specific Y2K Readiness Checklists Go .

Why you shouldn't rely solely on this list

Caution! We recommend that you do not rely solely on any second-hand summaries of the Y2K compliance status of various products, including any summaries which may appear on this page or elsewhere on this Web site.

Instead, you should always check with your products' current vendors (through their Web sites Go or otherwise) to directly obtain their Y2K compliance statements for your critical products.

This way, you'll be sure to obtain:

  • The most up-to-date compliance information.
    (Sometimes second-hand summaries are out-of-date.)

  • Additional compliance details or qualifications you need to know.
(Sometimes second-hand summaries don't include these details.)

Legend to symbols used below

[Compliant]
Compliant
The product's vendor asserts that the product is Y2K compliant in all versions, no patches or updates are required, and that there are no date-related "usage issues" to be concerned about.
[Compliant]
Caution
The product's vendor asserts that one or more of the following conditions are present:

  • The product is Y2K compliant but has date-related usage issues. If the product is carelessly used, Y2K-related problems could still occur.

Make sure that anyone using the product is fully aware of these usage issues.

  • The product's current version is compliant. However, one or more previous versions likely to be used on the UC Berkeley campus are non-compliant or will not be tested for Y2K compliance.

Determine whether you are using a compliant version. If not, consider upgrading, replacing, or retiring your older version of the product.

  • Some versions of the product - either the current version or one or more previous versions likely to be used on the UC Berkeley campus - have minor Y2K compliance "issues."

If you're using one of these versions, determine whether these issues might cause problems for you, given the way that you use the product. You might also check whether your vendor plans to release a patch or update to resolve these problems.

  • Some versions of the product are Y2K non-compliant, but you can install no-cost patches or updates to make the product compliant or compliant with "minor issues."

If you're using one of these versions, obtain and install the relevant patch or update.

  • The vendor has not yet tested all current versions of the product.
[Non-compliant]
Non-compliant
The product's vendor asserts that the current version of the product is not Y2K compliant, or the vendor will not be checking the product for Y2K compliance.

If the status of one or more of your important application programs is listed as "Caution" or "Non-compliant", refer to Commercial Off-the-Shelf Applications: Finding & Resolving Y2K Problems Go for checklists to help you resolve these application compliance problems.

Free Agent (reader for Usenet newsgroups)

[Compliant] Vendor's primary Y2K page Go
Vendor's home (or main products) page Go

The vendor states that Free Agent version 1.21 Go is "is Y2K-compliant." No details are provided on the vendor's Web site regarding Y2K issues which may have been identified in previous versions.

An unofficial description of Y2K problems in earlier versions of Free Agent appears in Jim L. Bradley's November 29, 1999 posting to the alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent newsgroup, Y2K and other matters affecting various [Free] Agent versions Go, which is linked from his Unofficial Forté [Free] Agent Newsreader site Go.

According to Mr. Bradley's posting, there are two significant Y2K problems with Free Agent version 1.11 and earlier: a failure of the program's "Get New Groups" command (although there is a workaround for this problem), and incorrect handling of incoming messages whose Date: headers contain two-digit years, which can lead to incorrect purging or exporting of these messages.

Mr. Bradley also claims that Free Agent version 1.2 still has a problem (not described in detail in his posting) when handling messages whose Date: headers contain two-digit-year dates. Fortunately, Mr. Bradley notes that a relatively small percentage of newsgroup messages - estimated to range from less than 1% to 10%, depending on the group - are likely to contain a two-digit year in their Date: header field.

In addition, according to a report from a user of Free Agent version 1.0 on the UC Berkeley campus, the program halted with a "date overrun" error when attempting to retrieve messages from certain subscribed newsgroups. The user found that this problem was resolved when upgrading to version 1.21. (We do not know whether this problem might also be present in any versions other than version 1.0.)

Note that Free Agent version 1.0 was distributed on the UC Berkeley campus by a Workstation Support Services Web site through early January 2000.

KeyServer (software license metering)

[Compliant] Vendor's primary Y2K page Go
Vendor's home (or main products) page Go

KeyAccess, KeySentry and KeyCheckout are 100% compliant and have been compliant throughout their development history.

Versions 5.0 (released in October 1997) and later of KeyServer, KeyAudit, and KeyConfigure are compliant.

Log files created by KeyServer prior to version 5.0 store data for dates containing 2-digit years. However, Beginning with KeyConfigure 5.0 ... [that application can correctly interpret and report] ... date information ... from pre-5.0 log files via a windowing technique whereby two-digit years between "80" and "99" are interpreted as falling into the 1900s.

KeyAudit's audit files [first] became compliant with the release of version 5.0 in October 1997.

The KeyServer Administrator may see dates displayed in the Users window (such as 1/1/0) that appear incorrect. This is a reflection of the date format being used by the client and can be remedied at the client level
by changing the OS's default date format to display four-digit years Go.

Vendor's compliance statement last checked July 16, 1999.

McGill TCP3270 (terminal emulation)

[Compliant] We have not found a direct vendor compliance statement regarding this product.

However, Pierre Goyette of Hummingbird Communications Ltd was quoted, in a February 1999 message Go posted to the HostExplorer Users Mailing List Go as stating that:

TCP3270 is Y2K compliant since it does not store/deal with dates in any way.

And Jerry Dodd of the University of Virginia wrote, in the same message in which he quoted Mr. Goyette:

... we have tested TCP3270 v3.14 in our year 2000 test partition and have not had a single problem.

These informal communications should not be considered to represent definitive information about TCP3270's compliance status, as they are not formal statements by this product's vendor. Hummingbird Communciations' newer terminal emulation program, Host Explorer Go, has been site licensed by the UC Berkeley campus. Its vendor states that the core Host Explorer program is Y2K compliant.

The latest versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer are asserted by Microsoft to be either Y2K compliant, or to have a small number of minor Y2K issues which can be resolved by updating or upgrading to a newer release.

According to Microsoft, Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x for Windows requires three separate updates to be made compliant; as a result, an upgrade to a newer version may be warranted. In addition, Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x for the Macintosh is non-compliant.

Vendor's compliance statement last checked October 27, 1999.

Microsoft Office (productivity suite with word processing, spreadsheets, presentations)

[Compliant] Vendor's primary Y2K page Go
Vendor's home (or main products) page Go

The most recent versions of Office for both Windows and the Mac OS are generally Y2K compliant.

However, several of the individual Microsoft Office application programs, most notably Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access (the latter is included in some Windows versions of Office), have some date usage issues which can result in Y2K problems. Make sure that anyone using the product is fully aware of these usage issues.

For details, see Microsoft's Y2K Product Summaries for the individual Office products via Microsoft's Year 2000 Product Guide Go, as well as the summary of Y2K issues which may affect spreadsheets and database files - including those created or modified by Excel and Access - which you can find in Data Files: Finding & Resolving Y2K Problems Go .

In addition:

  • Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows is asserted by Microsoft in its Y2K Product Summary for Office 2000 Standard for Windows Go to be Y2K compliant.

However, as noted above, there are some Y2K date usage issues which can affect individual applications such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access, both in Office 2000 and in all previous versions of Office.

  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows requires the Office 97 SR-2b update Go for Y2K compliance. This sizeable update can be downloaded or obtained on CD (recommended) at no cost.

Microsoft describes nearly all of the Y2K fixes included in this update in the Support Online article Year 2000 Related Problems Corrected in Microsoft Office 97 SR-2 Go. (The SR-2b update also incorporates two additional Year 2000 updates for Outlook and Microsoft Jet 3.5, whose descriptions are linked from the Office 97 SR-2b update Go page.)

Microsoft states that to install SR-2b, you must [first] have Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) or higher installed on your computer. The Office 97 SR-1 update can also be downloaded or obtained on CD at no cost.

For help in determining which Office 97 Service Releases have already been installed, you can download and run Microsoft's Office 97 Version Checker Go.

  • Microsoft Office 95 for Windows requires the Office 95 Year 2000 Update Go for Y2K compliance, which can be downloaded at no cost. See Microsoft's Support Online article How to Download and Install the Year 2000 Update Go for detailed instructions. This article notes that:

There have been several releases of this patch. If you downloaded this patch prior to July 1999, you may want to download it again and reinstall it to ensure that you are using the most current version of the patch.

  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition is Y2K compliant, according to Microsoft, when we last checked the vendor's Readiness Disclosure on January 4, 2000.

However, in late December 1999, Microsoft released an update to Microsoft Excel 98 that corrects a problem when saving worksheet data to text files using Visual Basic for Applications. This problem results in dates being saved with only century-ambiguous two-digit years, which can cause these dates to be assigned to an incorrect century when later imported by Excel or another program. The update is available in two formats: as a standalone Microsoft Excel 98 Y2K Updater Go and included with other Office 98 fixes in a Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition/Mac OS 9 Updater Go.

In addition, Microsoft has for some time made available a no-cost patch Go to resolve a minor issue when saving files from PowerPoint 98 for use with PowerPoint 4.0.

  • Microsoft Office 4.2.1 for the Mac OS is stated by Microsoft to be compliant with some very "minor issues" affecting some of the individual Office applications. There is no patch or update available to resolve these minor issues.

Vendor's compliance statements last checked June 23, 1999. Updates: Vendor's compliance statement for Office 97 last checked November 30, 1999, and for Office 98 last checked January 4, 2000.

MT-NewsWatcher (reader for Usenet newsgroups)

[Compliant] Vendor's primary Y2K page Go
Vendor's home (or main products) page Go

MT-NewsWatcher 3.0 is believed to be Y2K compliant. Dates used internally are stored in Apple's standard date format, so properly handle dates between 1 Jan 1904 and 6 Feb 2040.

However, like any news client, correct functioning of MT-NewsWatcher during the Y2K transition requires that your news server, and the news transport system in general, is Y2K compliant. The distributed nature of Usenet news makes it impossible to verify that the entire system will function normally during the transition; there is a possibility that some news distribution problems could occur.

There is no information provided on the author's Web site regarding the compliance status of versions of this product prior to 3.0. An earlier version of MT-NewsWatcher, 2.4.4, was included in the Fall 1998 and 1999-2000 releases of the Connecting@Berkeley CD Go, UC Berkeley's in-house Internet connection "kit."
