Federal Funding Requirements

Federal funding requirements for Y2K compliance can be found at: http://www.spo.berkeley.edu/Policy/y2k.html

Customized Applications

Many customized applications (in C++, dBASE, and other languages) have been created for research or instruction. A systematic and detailed process is provided to correct Y2K problems. To avoid incorrect or corrupted research data, every program (customized or off-the-shelf) that receives, stores, processes, or sends data must be reviewed to avoid Y2K problems. In the case of customized programs, this review needs to be a line-by-line code review.

Off-the-shelf Software

All off-the-shelf software used for obtaining, storing, or processing research data should be identified, and vendor Y2K information checked for software patches and upgrades. (Most of this information will be found on vendor web sites.) In particular, statistical software should be carefully reviewed.

Research Data

Date fields in databases and dates in other files should be checked to make sure that they use four digits to denote the year, and changed if they do not. Related (customized) programs should be changed as necessary to work with the changed date format.

Computers

Computers and operating systems, particularly computers integrated with or attached to research equipment, should be fixed or upgraded as necessary. (Macintosh computers do not require checking for hardware and operating system problems. Other computers definitely do.) Checklists and other procedures and information are available to help with this review.

Research Equipment

Information to assess whether research equipment is Y2K compliant can be found here, including a step-by-step assessment and remediation process. The emphasis of the recommended process is on identifying the relatively few pieces of research equipment that are both critical and likely to have a Y2K problem.

Rollover Planning

Information on actions after January 3rd, 2000, to minimize Y2K problems, is provided here.
