Y2K Status of the UC Berkeley Campus

As of: January 3, 2000, approximately 12:00 noon local time (2000-01-03 12:00 -0800)

Overall

With the return to business today (January 3, 2000), the Berkeley campus reports it experienced very minimal Y2K-related problems and that all central computing systems are up and operating normally.

Security and Safety

The UC Police Department reported that no Y2K-related incidents occurred over the weekend of January 1-2, 2000. Campus access control and alarm systems are operating as expected.

The Office of Environment, Health & Safety reported that there were no problems reported or identified regarding hazardous materials or hazardous wastes over the weekend.

Electric Power

Physical Plant - Campus Services reported that power from the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) was not interrupted during the weekend, so use of the campus cogeneration plant was not needed to supply power.

Building Systems and Equipment

Physical Plant - Campus Services reported that no problems were encountered with building systems or equipment, including heating systems, elevators, and alarms, through the weekend and as of Monday morning.

The Real Estate Services Office reported that they did not have any reports of Y2K problems with the approximately 30 buildings leased by the campus.

Campus Network, Phone System, and Radios

Communication and Network Services (CNS) reported that no unusual problems occurred with the campus networks over the weekend, and that the voice, data, and radio communication infrastructures continue to function normally.

Computing Systems

Central Computing Services (CCS) reported that its staff members performed back-up procedures on more than 60 central computing systems during the afternoon of Friday, December 31, 1999 (a university holiday) to ensure that a complete and correct copy of all online information was saved and available for future reference. CCS staff then shut down many servers and restarted all systems early on January 1st. No unusual problems occurred during the weekend testing, monitoring and production cycles, and all servers continue to operate normally at this time.

Administrative Systems Department (ASD) reported that during the weekend all scheduled batch jobs ran successfully, and there have been no production problems. On-line systems, including the Berkeley Financial System (BFS) and Payroll/Personnel System (PPS), were brought up for users to enter production data and to perform system tests on Sunday. Normal production schedules are now in effect.

Student Information Systems tested central student application systems on January 1st for any Y2K problems. Tele-Bears encountered some problems with the interactive voice response system, but these problems were corrected through quick action by IST staff working with the vendor in New York. No other significant problems were found, and all student applications continue to function normally.
