Landlord Letter
February 12, 1999
Title Re: Property Address/Y2K Ð The Year 2000 Problem Dear Name: As you know, The Regents of the University of California is a tenant in your building. The Berkeley Campus has created a Year 2000 (Y2K) Steering Committee which is charged with planning for Year 2000 readiness. As part of that effort, I have been asked to write to all of our landlords to request written confirmation that you are doing everything necessary to ensure that building systems will be operational on the opening of business on Monday, January 3, 2000. We will also be identifying an individual at each leased location who will function as a first point of contact for problems that may arise with building systems in leased locations who will communicate with your assigned representative if problems arise. As most of you are no doubt aware, many building systems may experience problems recognizing the century date change, including HVAC, elevators, lighting, security, fire detection, telecommunications and building access. Most of these types of building systems utilize "embedded systems" or equipment controlled by software. As building owners, you should contact the manufacturers of these systems and research whether or not you need to do anything to make sure the equipment does not fail. There are potential long lead times to schedule testing and/or upgrades with vendors, so we urge you to start immediately if you haven't already. Attached is a Y2K Compliance Checklist for Landlords of Property Leased to University of California, Berkeley that we are asking you to complete and return to us no later than March 8, 1999. I have also attached a helpful article from BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) that describes the potential problems. More information can be obtained by calling them at (800) 426-6292 or checking out their web page at www.boma.org. We appreciate your willingness to communicate your efforts to us, and know that we are all working towards the same goal of a trouble-free transition to the next century. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this, please feel free to call me at (510) 643-2066. Sincerely,
Helen Levay Enclosures cc: UC Department Tenant Contact
